This study evaluates whether virtual PLCs (vPLCs) can overcome the main drawbacks of hardware PLCs, including long downtime during updates, high maintenance costs, and limited scalability due to decentralized hardware. It analyzes how vPLCs could reduce these issues and defines the resulting business value both for customers, through lower costs and higher flexibility, and for vendors, through new service and revenue models.
